We’re celebrating Team Hospice this Hospice Care Week

It’s Hospice Care Week all this week (9-15 October) and we’d love you to get involved!  Each year we join Hospice UK and other local hospices for a week of celebration and action. It’s a chance for us to reflect on the difference hospice care makes to people’s lives and to thank everyone involved in making it possible.

The theme this year is ‘We are hospice care’ and we will be using the week to shine a spotlight on the amazing individuals helping us to provide expert, compassionate and free care to people with terminal or life-shortening illnesses.

From our nursing care staff, our volunteers, our trustees and our supporters, we couldn’t provide the vital, compassionate care we do without their expertise and dedication – and your support.

Please support Hospice Care Week by:

  • Getting in touch about volunteering with us by calling our main office on 01434 600 388
  • Making a donation. Every pound donated makes a different to providing our vital care – a £20 donation will provide one hour of palliative nursing care to someone who needs it in a place of their choosing. Visit www.tynedalehospice.com/donate/
  • Getting involved on social media by sharing our posts and using the hashtag #WeAreHospiceCare

A huge thank you from everyone at Tynedale Hospice at Home for all you do to get involved and support our work.

Keep up with our news about the many faces of our hospice care as the week unfolds by following our stories on Facebook and Twitter.

Let us entertain you!

,

We’re delighted to be welcoming The Berwick Male Voice Choir to Trinity Church in Hexham on Friday, 27 October where they’ll be hosting a concert in support of our Hospice.

The choir boast a 50 year old history which all began with three men innocently having a drink and a sing in the bar of the King’s Arms Hotel Berwick-upon-Tweed.  One supposes it was quite usual to sing in those days as any entertainment was often a DIY job. The ‘boys’ were asked to sing quietly because the noise could be disturbing the residents in the rooms above.  Luckily for them though, the singing proved popular and the seeds of the choir were sown.

Fast forward to today and their concerts have become a popular feature in the Berwick area and beyond including at Carlisle, York and Pitlochry.

Led by conductor Robin Cheer, a former Band Sergeant Major in the Royal Artillery Alanbrooke Band and accompanied at the piano by wife Isabel, former Director of Music and now Senior Teacher Pastoral at Longridge Towers School, Berwick-upon-Tweed, this musical extravaganza promises to be a feast for the ears.

Doors open at 7pm and tickets are priced at £6.50.  They can be bought from our charity and book shop on Battle Hill in Hexham or by calling Cathy on 01434 606 444.

Flying high at 80!

,

We’re constantly in awe of the lengths some people will go to support our Hospice – and Alison Ross, one of our volunteers, is an amazing example of someone who goes that extra mile.

She turned 80 last month and instead of putting her feet up with a cuppa or having a party, she celebrated by taking to the high ropes at Go Ape in Matfen on Saturday, 16 September – and has raised £4,000 for Tynedale Hospice at Home!

The daring challenge saw her navigate a high rope obstacle course, zip along a zip wire and leap off Tarzan Swings.

She’s no stranger to incredible fundraising feats and has a long tradition of celebrating her milestone birthdays in impressive style – at 70 she swum a mile and raised £2,000, and when she turned 75 she zipped wired across the River Tyne raising £6,000 – all for Tynedale Hospice at Home. Over the years she’s raised in excess of £22,000 for the Hospice through her famous cake and bake sales and daring fundraisers.

Alison said: “I know many people who have used the Hospice’s services.  They make a huge difference to patients and their families, providing amazing care at what can be an extremely difficult time.  I can’t think of a better reason to put myself through these challenges.  Knowing I am supporting a charity close to my heart is all the motivation I need.”

If ever there was proof that age is just a number – Alison is a shining example and we can’t thank her enough.

Junior Great North Runners step up to the Mark!

,

We had a brilliant day with our 50 Junior Great North Runners who joined us on the NewcastleGateshead quayside in this year’s Junior Great North Run on Saturday, 9 September. They have helped raised an incredible £5,000 thanks to their amazing efforts. Here are some of the photos from the day. They are true superstars and we can’t thank them enough.

Bags of Help

It’s been a busy few days in the Tynedale Hospice office as we’ve been counting up donations from a day of bag packing at M&S Hexham.

Eager bag packers included many of our junior and Great North Runners, many of whom proudly showed off their running t-shirts and vests as they packed.

Getting through those buckets definitely took some time but on of our brilliant volunteers, Sophie, carefully counted up the change. One collection tin had more than £130 of donations in – which just goes to show how all those pennies (and pound coins) can add up!

We were excited to learn the grand total raised which comes in at £678.88!! We are delighted! A big thank you to M&S Hexham for their ongoing support, to all of their customers who took the time to chat to our bag packers and donate, to our team of friendly and enthusiastic bag pack volunteers and to Sophie for doing a brilliant job counting up all the donations.

Our junior and adult Great North Runners will be running in aid of Tynedale Hospice on the 9th and 10th September and will be hoping to raise over £10,000 between them!

Stroll On Launches!

This week we see the launch of a very special account of one man’s journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats – on foot! In April 2016, Chris Francis from Humshaugh in Northumberland, set out to complete a long held ambition to walk the length of Britain. Stroll On! is an inspiring and entertaining account of his journey and is available now to purchase.
