About Us
Tynedale Hospice at Home is a well-established charity of over 30 years. We’re here to provide high quality care and support to the approximately 70,000 residents of West Northumberland, Tynedale, and Ponteland.
We’re dedicated to providing compassionate palliative care and support to those living in our catchment area which covers an 800 square mile radius, much of which is rural. We provide nursing care, bereavement support to all ages, complementary therapies and patient transport. Our services are available from the moment of need, which could be at the point of diagnosis, or when medical requirements become more complex. We also provide vital end of life care, allowing people to remain at home until death, if that is their wish.
Our services are integrated into the wider palliative care network in the local area, working with GPs, social workers, schools, community NHS teams and other professionals providing a vital link in our community’s healthcare provision.
Hospice care is a type of care, rather than a setting, so we don’t operate a hospice with inpatient beds. Instead our team of registered nurses and hospice support workers deliver round-the-clock care in the comfort of your own home. We firmly believe in the positive power of familiar surroundings and the support of loved ones during difficult times. So everything we do is centred around keeping people together and allowing those with life-limiting or palliative care needs to avoid prolonged hospital stays. This means providing wraparound care not just for the patient but providing support to family, friends and carers too.
Our holistic care is delivered in a variety of locations including the patient’s home, GP practices and in local schools. It’s all completely free of charge, made possible by the incredible generosity of our community. From the funds raised through our retail operations, grants, and charitable donations, to the contribution we receive from the NHS, every penny goes towards implementing our vision to ensure local people impacted by life-limiting illness, or death, receive the support they need.
But we couldn’t do it alone. Our volunteers are at the core of everything we do. We’re truly grateful for the support we receive from our volunteers and everyone in the wider community.
If you’re in the area, feel free to visit our central office in Hexham. We’d be happy to tell you more about our work. Just call ahead so we can make sure someone is available to welcome you.

Costs and how we are funded
We currently receive 4% guaranteed funding from the NHS. We need to raise £1 million in the year 2026/27 to run our care services. In order to reach this income target, we must fundraise and actively engage with our community to encourage support. Funds are raised through different activities including events, donations, retail sales, e-commerce and trust and grant applications.
Our mission continues to be at the forefront of what we do, to provide at home care, patient transport, bereavement support and complementary therapies to those in need. We are extremely grateful for the input we receive from our supporters who continue to help the hospice achieve its goal, reaching more patients who are in need of our support.
Care Quality Commission
The Hospice carries statutory obligations as a registered Hospice at Home service with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The Charity Commission and company law impose requirements of effective financial management and good governance.
The Hospice was inspected in May of 2026 and rated ‘Good’ overall and in each of the five domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. As part of their inspection, the CQC spoke to bereaved family members about their loved ones’ care and some of these conversations are cited in the report: ‘One patient’s family member told us the nurses always treated her and her husband with kindness, dignity and respect – she always felt the nurses listened to her. The nurses always asked how she was coping and cared for her wellbeing both physically and mentally – she “never felt alone”’.
Another family member said that ‘on a scale of 1 -100 for the best ever care they would give 1,000, and that during the most “heartbreaking and saddest times in our lives these nurses were a light in our darkness.”
This maintains our rating from our last inspection in June 2022 and is a testament to the compassionate, person-centred care that our staff and volunteers deliver every single day.
